A Hippogriff is a magical creature that has the front legs, wings, and head of a giant eagle and the body, hind legs and tail of a horse. It is very similar to another mythical creature, the Griffin, with the horse rear replacing the lion rear. Hippogriffs have cruel, steel-colored beaks and large, brilliantly orange eyes. The talons on their front legs are half a foot long and appear deadly and can be used with great force when the creature is defending itself. The breeding of fancy Hippogriffs is an established wizarding career, with known breeders including the infamous Newton Scamander's mother. Images of said fancy Hippogriffs are sometimes put onto calendars and sold in shops in Diagon Alley.

When anyone approaches a Hippogriffs, proper etiquette must be maintained to avoid danger. Hippogriffs are intensely proud creatures, and an individual must show proper respect by bowing to them, and waiting for them to bow in return before approaching. Eye contact should be maintained at all times, without a single blink. The Hippogriff should be allowed to make the first move as this is polite. If offended, it may attack. Hippogriffs are tamable, but only by experts in their care like the professors here at school or the breeders whom know the species. If you run into a hippogriff and it doesnt accept your bow it is important to back away quickly without breaking eye contact as thats the proper way to retreat. Although proud, Hippogriffs can also be fiercely loyal and protective of those who have earned their trust so be weary of upsetting anyone whom keeps these creatures as pets.

Now, the diet of the Hippogriff consists mainly of insects, birds, and small mammals such as ferrets. They will sometimes paw at the ground for worms if no other food is readily available. When breeding, Hippogriffs build nests on the ground, and lay only a single, fragile egg. The egg usually hatches in twenty-four hours since even a rainstorm can break these fragile eggs. Infant Hippogriffs are capable of flight within a week, but it takes many months before they are strong enough to accompany their parents on long journeys or can carry a wizard on their back.

Today we will be working with the herd we keep as pets here at Hogwarts. They help keep pests out of our grounds and in a pinch can be used to travel quickly to nearby villages if Professors need supplies or aid. Your first interactions will be done in smaller groups so pair up. There are a total of five hippogriffs in the Paddock today. The more.... freindly of the bunch so to say. Approach them not in your group but one at a time, bowing as you were instructed. Retreat if they do not bow back, step to the side if they do so the next student can take their turn. When all of you have been accepted you can as a group interact and feed your Hippogriff today. We will see whos interacting the best out of their groups and maybe allow a couple students to go for a ride over the lake today. So go ahead. Lets get started.

Care of Magical Creatures is an elective course here at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry that can be chosen by students in their Third year. In the class, students will learn about a wide range of magical creatures. There are many jobs outside Hogwarts for students who acheive O.W.L.s and N.E.W.Ts of this particular nature. So dont just see this as a fluff class where you can play with interesting creatures and slack off for the time you are here. I expect great things from my students.

So what will be working with this term? Here at Hogwarts alone we have access to a variety of creatures incuding Common Magical Dwellers, Forest Dwellers, Lake Dwellers, and Sky Dwellers. So using that to our advantage this term we will learn about Gnomes & Flobberworms and what a hassles they can be on our gardens and yards, Fire Crabs a magical species that is hunted for its shell, Hippogriffs the regal and dangerous forest dweller, Thestrals whom some of you may not be able to see at all but its important to learn about them anyways since we care for a great many here at Hogwarts, Grindylows a rather bothersome creature that dwells in the lakes, Hippocampus a creature built from legend in the flesh, Cornish Pixies a mischevious ill behaved flying nusance, Billywigs whos venomous sting has led to its near exctinction for its uses in potions due to it causing giddiness and leviataion, Diriclaws also known as DoDo birds whom escape danger by vanishing into a puff of feathers, and lastly the Fwooper a dangerous bird whos cries will drive the listener insane if not handled properly.

Students will be taught about feeding, maintaining, breeding, and proper treatment of these various creatures. Though some of them like the Billywig & Fwooper arent native to our region they are often found on the black markets in our world our pet shops where anyone with the improper knoweldge can put us in danger. Some of these creatures you will run into in your own backyard. It cannot be stressed more how important it is for us to maintain, care for and breed some of these creatures as they are dying out more and more every year. Hunted down for their uses in potions and spells or killed off for a lack of knoweldge how to properly handle them. Hopefully with each new generation of students whom learn to care for these creatures their numbers will once again flourish within our world and will not be lost to us forever.

FlobberWorms are a ten-inch, toothless brown worm which eats vegetation, especially lettuce and cabbage. It is a fairly boring creature, with a Ministry of Magic Classification of only X (the lowest possible ranking, or "boring"). Each end is identical to the other, each end chews vegetation and from both it exudes mucus which is sometimes used to thicken potions. It moves very little and prefers to live in damp ditches.

Flobberworms are apparently edible and Flobberworm fritters are sometimes served for lunch here at school, much to the dismay of the student body. The Flobberworm is notable for being one of the few living creatures capable of being Summoned with the Summoning Charm. Their care is fairly simple so long as you keep their enormous appetites fed. When your garden is infested however it is not the smartest idea to summon these worms by summoning charm for while you may only see one worm munching on your garden there may infact be hundreds in the area. Imagine 100 mucus covered worms flying right toward you. It is best to use a FlobberWorm replant on your vegetables as they will not munch anything its touched so no harm comes to the worm.

Today in class we will be interacting with the worms we breed here at the castle to control the weed population and sometimes eat for lunch. This care will be simple enough as today we are just feeding them. Its more about you getting to see what they look like so you know how to properly identify them. Todays main lesson is focusing however on another garden pest.

Much like FlobberWorms a Gnome, or Garden Gnome, is a magical creature commonly known to infest the gardens of wizarding households. The correct taxonomical name for gnomes is, purportedly, Gernumbli Gardensi, or sometimes referred to as Gernumblies. They are found throughout Europe and North America. A gnome in the Muggle world is an inanimate statue that looks like a small Father Christmas and look nothing like a real garden gnome so dont go looking around for men in funny hats.

Gnomes can actually reach a size of approximately one foot and are usually brown in color with disproportionately large heads, making them look like potatoes with legs. Their feet are actually hard and bony used for digging giant holes into the earth where they burrow and stay.

These burrows underground, known as gnomeholes, are where they dig up and eat the roots considerable damage to them). Gnomes also seem to like worms and Bertie Bott's Every-Flavour Beans. The natural predator of the Gnome is the Jarvey. Jarvey's are basically overgrown Ferrets that are capable of human speech. However speaking to a jarvey is nearly impossible as it uses short, normally rude statements and phrases to communicate. Jarvey's however can make decent pets for garden lovers as they feed mainly on gnomes and moles while staying underground themselves. Their means of disposing of such creatures however are far more brutal. It is far more humane to simply degnome your garden by the traditional means which you will be learning today after a short interaction of feeding the little buggers.

Because of the havoc they wreak upon gardens and the fact that they are somewhat of a giveaway of wizarding homes, gnomes are deemed pests by the wizarding community. "Gnome-control" typically consists of taking hold of the gnomes, swinging them around until they are dizzy, and then throwing them beyond the yard's perimeter fence or wall. Gnomes have the ability to speak, or at least make noises, saying 'Gerroff me!' which sounds like 'let go' when people are de-gnoming, they are also able to scream when thrown away and mumble angrily when they walk away. However they often laugh when a de-gnoming is not done properly as they find it a fun game and will wander back to your garden within the day.

Interestingly, the species has such a low level of intelligence that when a de-gnoming is being carried out they will hurry out of their burrows to see what's causing the commotion, which only renders them easier to catch. Now let head into Paddock 9 and feed the worms so we can go degnome the gardens before the herbology teacher gets on my case again.

A Thestral is a breed of winged horses with a skeletal body, face with reptilian features, and wide, leathery wings that resemble a bat's. They are very rare, and are considered dangerous by the Ministry of Magic. Thestrals are, undeservedly, known as omens of misfortune and aggression by many wizards because they are visible only to those who have witnessed death at least once. Though its also probably due to their somewhat grim, gaunt and ghostly appearance.

These magical creatures can be found in dark environments, and the forest is their natural habitat. They communicate with each other through a shrill and strange shriek that resembles some sort of monstrous bird. They appear to be loyal creatures, able to discern a friend from an enemy. Thestrals would forcefully attack anyone or anything they see as a threat and, in the unusual case of domesticated Thestrals, any enemy of its owners.

Thesterals are carnivorous animals and are attracted to the smell of blood. Thestrals often attack birds. This indicates that, naturally, they hunt not only for food in the ground, but also pursue flying prey. The Thestrals that live within the Hogwarts grounds, in the Forbidden Forest, are properly fed and well trained. They don't attack other creatures or students unless seriously disturbed.

The Thestral tail hair is a powerful and tricky substance that can be mastered only by a witch or wizard capable of facing death. It should be noted that this substance can be used as a core in a wand's conception and it was used to create the most powerful wand known by wizards, the Elder Wand. The most well known ability of these beasts is their invisibility to those who haven’t seen death. In other words, they are only visible to people who have seen someone dying and fully accepted, understood and internalized the concept. Thestrals have an extraordinary sense of smell and will easily recognize the smell of blood and fresh flesh, even if the source of the scent is rather distanced. They also have quite a useful sense of direction. The Thestral can understand exactly where their riders need to go, so they are used as an alternative to brooms, Apparition and other methods of transportation. Once trained, they are very diligent and will quickly carry their owners wherever they wish to go. However, travel by Thestral is technically illegal, as it is a breach of the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy and is often times unnerving as if you havent witnessef someone die they are invisible. Due to their classification as XXXX, only experienced wizards should try to handle Thestrals. Breeding as well as owning these beasts may be discouraged or even illegal without Ministry consent; in fact, wizards that live in areas not protected against Muggles are forced by law to perform Disillusionment Charms on their Thestrals regularly. When riding a Thestral, the traveller usually holds the creature's mane to ensure balance during the flight (or ride.) To aid the mounting, the wizards also place their legs behind the wing joints to provide safety.

These gentle, winged beasts are very capable and fast fliers and can travel long distances hardly beating their large wings. Their powerful wings are capable of lifting, at least, the burden of two humans plus their own weight. Flying on the back of a Thestral during a long journey is frequently an unpleasant experience, particularly to those who dare riding them without seeing the creature. The high speed flight on an invisible steed can be terrifying. The wind will, eventually, cause a temporary deafness and will force the riders to close their eyes. It is often difficult to keep balance on their slick backs. The Hogwarts herd is gentle towards humans, they react satisfactorily to caresses and avoid attacking owls. However, taking into consideration the Ministry of Magic classification as "dangerous", this behavior may be exclusive to well-trained Thestrals, or just mere prejudice from the Ministry.

Here at school we have a very loyal flock of Thestrals used mainly to pull the carriages that lead elder students from Hogsmeade Station to the gates of the Castle. To people who cannot see Thestrals, it appears that the carriages are autonomous. The herd at Hogwarts started with a male and five females. A number of them have been born since. They are often used by professors to travel to and from London in a pinch when weather permits and apperation hasnt been perfected.

Today we will be meeting a small group of these animals, if you can not see them there are a few ways in which you can still interact with the creatures. When we first get inside the Paddock split into two groups, those who can see the creatures and those of you who cannot. Ready? Lets go.
